How do you make family history interesting to 20-somethings?

Role

I was a member of one of three teams that helped with running statistics to analyze survey data. Using the survey data, we looked at questions and responses that would be related to each other and ran the according statistics. We also came up with timelines to complete the project and we went through multiple rounds of edits to make sure everything made sense.

Background

Family Search is a nonprofit organization and website offering genealogical records, education, and software. Family Search focuses on genealogy, and they wanted to figure out a way to get one of their target markets more involved with Family Search.

The Ask

We were given a survey from Family Search that had already been completed, and our job was to analyze the survey data to give insights and recommendations for Family Search to implement

Strategy

To analyze this data, I learned how to use the SPSS software. I had to determine if the questions I cross examined were ordinal, nominal, or interval variables to run the proper statistic on SPSS. Most of the statistics I ran were either Independent Sample T-tests, Chi Square, Pearson or Spearmen tests. Once this was determined, I was able to look at the proper data points to make proper analysis.

Deliverables

We created a 60 page booklet with our teams research to give to Family Search. In this book, we provided insights for each section that Family Search can use later on. We also had an implication and suggestion section, where we gave Family Search recommendations based on the research our teams completed.

1. SPSS looks like it comes straight out of internet explorer in 2005, but it is an extremely helpful tool to digest research that eventually leads to unique insights.

2. I also learned that sometimes it's harder to manage other account people than creatives. Since everyone has their own way of doing things, that can make it hard to figure out who should actually be in charge. However, once that is figured out, then it is great to have a lot of detail-oriented and organized people working on the same project.
